The Goa Union of Journalists here on Tuesday condemned the manner in which journalist Mukesh Kumar was treated by the city Police.

Mr. Kumar, working with a local cable television news channel has accused Police Inspector Pravin Vast, Sub Inspector Vikram Naik of racially abusing him. He also said the police paid no heed to his complaint that he was heckled by a group of young men in the city on Monday night.

Instead of taking action against the culprits, the police interacted with the hecklers in Konkani in a cordial manner and bundled him into the van.

At the police station he was slapped on the back of his head and racially abused by both police officials, he alleged.

Later Mr. Kumar and other journalists met the Superintendent of Police and other officials who have promised to look into the matter.

Senior police officials have informed the GUJ that the Panaji PI has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

“We demand that this inquiry be completed in a fair manner and on priority. We also demand that the concerned police officials be placed on suspension pending inquiry against them,” said Mr. Ashley Rosario, General Secretary, GUJ on Tuesday.
