The Meghalaya police on Thursday busted a camp of the militant Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), which shot dead a Garo woman in South Garo Hills district on Tuesday. However, GNLA militants at the camp in East Garo Hills district managed to flee into the dense forest after a heavy exchange of fire with the police.
Director-General of Police P.J. P. Hanaman told The Hindu that the “Chokpot command” of the GNLA led by self-styled commander Jengjeng was behind the brutal killing of the woman in Goera Rongat village on Tuesday.
An FIR filed by the police said two GNLA militants had gone to the woman’s residence and charged her with being a police collaborator. They shot her dead even as her four minor children and husband witnessed the horror helplessly.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told journalists in Shillong that his government would set up a special court to try the militants involved in the killing. The government announced an ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh to the next of kin of the victim.
