Five members of a family were killed when a goods-laden truck rammed into their roadside house in Odisha’s Subarnapur district late Thursday.
The victims were sleeping inside their house at Cherupalli along National Highway 26 when the accident occurred. The driver of the truck, which was coming from Baragarh district, was said to have lost control over the speeding vehicle.
“Under the impact of the collision, the mud-house had totally collapsed. All five members inside the house died. The driver fled the spot,” Sur Babu Chhatria, Inspector in-charge of Dunguripali Police Station, said over phone.
According to police, the deceased have been identified as Nabin Bag (50), his wife Binodini (40), son Susant (22), daughter Jayanti (14) and sister Brundabati (45). The head of the house was a member of a local body.
On Friday morning, people blocked the highway demanding adequate compensation for next of the kin of the family. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded as police tried pacify the protestors.
