Priceless heritage pieces were destroyed on Sunday in a fire in the world famous City Palace in Jaipur.
Royal costumes, pictures and artefacts were reduced to ashes in the fire that broke out in the Art Gallery situated in the Museum within the palace premises, part of which is still being used by the erstwhile Royal family.
The fire was detected at 8:45 a.m. from the double-storeyed building which was a big attraction for the tourists. However, since it was yet to open for the public, there were no reports of injury to anyone. As much as 50 per cent of the things kept in the museum were damaged in the fire.
More than 15 fire-tenders battled the flames for more than two hours before the blaze could be brought under control. Senior police officials, including the District Collector were at the spot supervising the fire-fighting operations.
Located in the heart of the walled city, the City Palace Complex was founded by Jaipur Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in the 19th century. This palace is a blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture.
On display in the museum weresome very exquisite and precious Pashmina (Kashmiri) shawls, Benaras silk saris, Sanganeri prints and folk embroidery. An unusual display is that of voluminous clothes worn by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I (ruled 1750-68).
