The Mumbai police on Wednesday registered a First Information Report against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and the editor of a Marathi news channel for alleged violation of the model code of conduct in force for the civic polls scheduled in the city for Thursday.
“We have registered an FIR against Raj Thackeray and Rajiv Khandekar under Sections 188 and 34 of the IPC [Indian Penal Code], after a BMC [Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation] official complained that ‘Star Majha' ran a live interview of Raj Thackeray after the … time [stipulated] for campaigning…,” said a police officer of the N.M. Marg Station, where the FIR was filed.
Section 188 deals with disobedience of an order promulgated by a public servant, and Section 34 is meant to tackle an act committed by several people in furtherance of a common intention. The model code stipulates that campaigning end 48 hours before elections.
