: The ferrochrome plant, which is to be the anchorage industry of the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Tata Steel named ‘Gopalpur Industrial Park’ in Ganjam district of Odisha, is expected to start production by May 2015.

Speaking to newsmen, vice-president of Tata Steel in charge of Gopalpur project Arun Mishra said this 55,000 Tons per Annum (TPA) ferrochrome plant would provide direct employment to 100 persons and indirect employment to 250 others. The company is awaiting required approval from the environment ministry for the second phase of this ferrochrome plant.

Mr Mishra added that with approval of government the company also plans to provide revised package of compensation to the displaced families. It may be noted that the families displaced for the now shelved Gopalpur mega steel project of the company in Ganjam district are demanding revised compensation package.

Tata Steel is planning to construct a special berth in future in the proposed all weather Gopalpur port.

The company is also thinking of expansion of the Rangeilunda air strip. These will be catalysts to attract investors to the SEZ as well as this region.

Construction work of 500-bedded ‘Tata Medica Hospital’ at Sitalapalli village in Ganjam district is already on.
