A memorial service was held for Sunil Gangopadhyay here on Sunday, organised by the litterateur’s friends and family.
Sunil Gangopadhyay died on October 23.
In stark contrast to the funeral procession of the renowned poet and author, no political figure was invited for Sunday’s event.
Jointly organised by his family and members of Krittibas , the poetry magazine of which Sunil Gangopadhyay was the founding editor, the function began with a clip of the poet reciting one of his poems.
This was followed by the rendition of a song penned by Rabindranath Tagore.
The decision not to invite politicians was deliberate, said the poet’s son Souvik Gangopadhyay: “The programme is meant to remember my father’s work. My father was not a politician nor was he the member of any political party.”
While the family decided not to adhere to Sunil Gangopadhyay’s wish that his body be donated for medical research, no Shraaddha ceremony was organised.
