Veteran Gandhian Chinubhai Vaidya passed away at his residence in Ahmedabad on Friday. He was 97.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel expressed grief at Mr. Vaidya’s demise.

“We have lost a lifetime follower of Gandhi,” Ms. Patel said in a statement.

Mr. Vaidya lived opposite the Sabarmati Ashram. He is survived by his adopted daughter, Nitaben Mahadeobhai Vidrohi.

“His life was a shining example of dedicated service to the downtrodden. It is a loss as today we do not have inspirational leaders and people like Mr. Vaidya provided that inspiration,” Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, told The Hindu .

Mr. Vaidya’s body was brought to the ashram, where friends and acquaintances paid their last respects. The cremation was held in the evening.

The ashram has organised a prayer service on Sunday in his memory.
