An earthquake measuring 7.2 at Richter >scale struck Myanmar , tremor felt in Manipur at 7: 25 p.m. on Wednesday. At least six persons were rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. Hospital sources told The Hindu that they are out of danger now.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located within Myanmar which is about 225 km away from Imphal, according to the department of earth science, Manipur University. The government officials are collecting information from the rest of the state on casualties and damages.

Reports said that the building of the police station at Lamphel was also damaged.

The two marketing complexes of women vendors in Imphal which had been damaged on the Janauary 4 earthquake were further damaged. Officials said that these may collapse any moment. Following the January 4 quake experts from IIT Rookee said that these were unsafe for humans.

Accordingly the government had constructed an alternative market for the 2000 women vendors. But most of them elected to do business under the damaged complexes since customers thronged there and not the new one where there is no parking lot even. Luckily for the women the quake struck only after most of them had left for homes after the day's business. Officials said that the State Bank of India and the

BSNL buildings in Imphal had minor damages in the Wednesday's quake.
