Drunk man tries to burn self, kin

July 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A drunk man allegedly tried to immolate himself and four family members at his residence in South-East Delhi’s Jaitpur on Sunday morning.

While his 12-year-daughter managed to escape, accused Kena Ram Mondal and three others sustained burns. The matter was reported to the police and the injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital. Barring Mondal, his wife, son and father-in-law are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

A fish seller, Mondal had frequent quarrels with his wife. His father-in-law had reportedly come from West Bengal to counsel the couple.

According to the police, Mondal poured kerosene on his wife and son Amit, who were sleeping.

Mondal then poured kerosene on himself and set the house on fire, the police said.

“All of them, except his daughter were asleep. She escaped by scaling the boundary wall,” said a senior police officer.
