With the monsoon in full swing, cases of electrocution are witnessing a steep rise.

Keeping this in view, the distribution companies (discoms) have begun a series of safety drills, besides conducting awareness programmes for consumers.

The discoms have undertaken works to minimise the accumulation of moisture in electrical grids and panels.

These include raising the foundation height of transformers in low-lying areas, cleaning rooftops and trenches to avoid waterlogging and pruning of trees to prevent entanglement with overhead cables.

“We request people to stay away from any electric pole or installation, especially if it is surrounded by water. People should alert the concerned discom in case they come across sparking or fallen electricity wires,” said an official of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL).

The BSES discoms have urged people not to park vehicles directly under overhead power lines.

“Consumers are requested to ensure that all metal-clad hardware at home like coolers or ACs are connected with earth and to switch off any electrical equipment or device, which is partially or completely submerged in water, to prevent shocks,” said a BSES spokesperson.

The discoms have also urged consumers to report, as well as convince people not to illegally hook on to mainlines or electrical equipment on road sides.

Apart from the 24x7 call centre, consumers can reach BSES through its emergency numbers for BRPL at 1-800-10-39707 and BYPL at 419-99808. Consumers under TPDDL can call at 664-04040 or connect through TPDDL Connect via their phones.
