The beleaguered Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade and the former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu are among the 25 owners who could lose their flats in the Adarsh Housing Society here as the Maharashtra government begins probing ineligible memberships.
On Thursday, as it accepted the Adarsh Commission report, the government said it would cancel memberships of those found ineligible.
“We will follow the due process. Notices will be issued and they will be given a hearing,” said Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Flats in the building range from 650 to 1076 square feet. With real estate prices in the area hovering around Rs. 50,000 a square foot, the flats are worth between Rs 3.25 crore and Rs 5 crore.
The Commission found Ms. Khobragade ineligible as she already owned another flat within the same municipal corporation.
When contacted, her father, Uttam Khobragade said they had given an undertaking that they would sell their other flat once they got membership in the Adarsh Society.
In the case of Mr. Prabhu, the Commission found that he was given a flat bigger than the one he was entitled to — a 1076-square feet flat allotted only to government servants. Mr. Prabhu ceased to be Minister in 2004 and thus he was eligible only for a 650-square feet flat.
The Commission found that three relatives of the former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan were also not eligible for flats in the building.
