June 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:13 pm IST - GURGAON:

With June 30 deadline set by the Divisional Commissioner D. Suresh to put in place all arrangements for checking water-logging in the city, the joint teams of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon and the Haryana Urban Development Authority worked overtime over the weekend to carry out desilting of drains across the city.

Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner told The Hindu that more than 50 per cent of the desilting work had been completed and the remaining work was likely to be completed in the coming four days. “It is for the first time that 20-km-long Kuccha Nala flowing through Sectors 26, 27 and 28 to Biodiversity Park is being desilted. Six machines are on the job and it may take another three-four days for the work to be complete. Also, Badshahpur drain is being cleared. The road gullies in sectors are also being cleaned to facilitate the flow of rain water in the drains,” said Mr. Satyaprakash.

He said that the challenge was Khandsa Road as the flow was expected to be 1,500 cusecs but the administration was prepared only for 800 cusecs so far. “We are also working on the Kaccha Nala through the Southern Peripheral Road after Vatika Chowk. The excavation work had already started and it is expected to be completed at the earliest,” said Mr. Satyaprakash.

The MCG and HUDA teams on Sunday carried out desilting of drains and cleaning of road gullies in Sector 15 Part-I, Old Delhi Road, Sushant Lok, Subhash Chowk, Khandsa village and DLF Phase-I. The teams also carried out the work of cleaning defunct rainwater harvesting pits. There are 21 non-functional rainwater harvesting pits in Sector 15 Part-I and II alone.

Earlier this week, Mr. Suresh, in a meeting with the senior HUDA and MCG officials had announced that all arrangements to check water-logging in the city would be put in place by the end of this month.

In the meeting, it was told that the district administration has set up a flood control room for rainy season and anybody could inform regarding waterlogging on Toll Free Number 1077. The information can also be given on landline numbers of the District Revenue Officer and the Deputy Commissioner.

It was also informed in the meeting that four teams had been constituted to monitor waterlogging in the different zones of the MCG and the teams were headed by senior officers, including the DC.
