The Tripura High Court has set aside the detention of an alleged extremist collaborator under National Security Act (NSA).
Disposing of a petition filed by Pradip Kalai alias Dolphin Kalai, challenging the detention, Justice S.C. Das on Friday ruled that the detention violated Article 22 of the Constitution.
Terming it as illegal, the judge said the reasons stated in the detention order were not acceptable.
Dolphin Kalai was arrested in connection with seizure of Rs. 25 lakh from him, his sister and another person near Agartala on June 16, 2012. It was alleged that the money was collected from a construction agency to fund the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT).
West Triprua District Magistrate and Collector later issued an order of detention of Dhanu Koloi and Dolphin Kalai under the NSA, terming them ‘security threats.’ The State NSA Advisory Board ratified the detentions.
The police said Dolphin Kalai acted as a key person in extortion business to benefit the NLFT.
