Cop accused of shooting Ishrat reinstated

Anaju Chaudhary, suspended commando of the State Reserve Police, who was accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, has been reinstated in service. He has been posted at the SRP camp at Godhra, P.C. Thakur, Director-General Police, Gujarat, told The Hindu .

As per the CBI chargesheet, Mr. Chaudhary was part of the team of five police officers who opened fire at Ms. Jahan and three others. Mr. Chaudhary fired 10 rounds from his sten gun. He was arrested by the CBI on February 27, 2013. After the agency failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated period of 90 days, a special CBI court granted him bail on May 29, 2013.

Mr. Chaudhary’s reinstatement follows the reinstatement of IPS officer G.L. Singhal, also an accused in the case.

The State government is also considering reinstating IPS officer Abhay Chudasama, one of the key accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
