Congress general secretary Ambika Soni, who is also the party in-charge for Himachal Pradesh, said on Friday that while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stated that he has got a representation from BJP leader on corruption charges against State Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, the party would be taking legal opinion in the matter.

Ms. Soni, who had met Mr. Singh during his visit to New Delhi a couple of days ago, said the Chief Minister had submitted a detailed reply to the allegations levelled against him by Mr. Jaitley. “The papers he has provided are very convincing and prima facie it appears to me that the CM has nothing to be afraid of,” she said.

The general secretary said since the Chief Minister has already stated that he is willing to stand up to any inquiry, be it a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, no one should jump to conclusions just yet. “Also, you just can’t be questioning character in the media like this. The papers are now with the Prime Minister and let him take a call on it.”

As for the party, Ms. Soni said both party President Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi have also been provided with the details of the Chief Minister’s submission and legal opinion is being sought on them. “From our side party leader Abishek Manu Singhvi had also interacted with Mr Singh and let’s see what further stand the party takes.”
