CBI probe recommended into advocate’s death

The State Government has recommended a CBI probe into the Allahabad incident, which claimed the life of an advocate in the police-lawyers’ clash in and outside the District Court premises on Wednesday. In a related development, sub-inspector Shailendra Singh, who is alleged to have fired from his service revolver resulting in the death of advocate, Nabi Ahmed, was arrested on Friday.

The State IG (Public Grievances), Ashok Mutha Jain told reporters that the CBI inquiry has been recommended into two cases related to the death of the advocate and the injury caused to a policeman following the clash. Confirming the sub-inspector’s arrest, Mr. Jain said further details are awaited.

Meanwhile, the Principal Secretary (Home), Debashish Panda and DG Police, Arvind Kumar Jain visited Allahabad on Friday to take stock of the situation. The IG (Public Grievances) said the two officers met the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. On the outcome of the meeting, the IG said it was decided that the Rapid Action Force will remain stationed in the District Court for another three to four days.

“Thereafter, the RAF will be replaced by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPC) and the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Mr. Asok Mutha Jain said.

He said the DG Police handed over a cheque of Rs. 5 lakh to the injured constable, Ajay Nagar, for his medical expenses. The constable, who suffered bullet injuries in the melee, is undergoing treatment in a local hospital in Allahabad.
