Campaign ends for U.P. phase-2 polls

Campaign for the phase-2 of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls ended at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Polling will be held on Saturday in 59 constituencies in 10 districts in the north-eastern region of the State.

Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla told The Hindu that all arrangements were made for the smooth conduct of elections. Polling personnel, with electronic voting machines and other material, would move to their polling stations on Friday.

A total of about 1.94 crore voters, including around 87 lakh women, are eligible to exercise their franchise at 20,426 polling stations and as many as 1098 contestants are in the fray.

The Gorakhpur Urban constituency has the highest number of 31 contestants.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party, the main Opposition Samajwadi Party and the Congress have fielded their nominees in all the constituencies. The Bharatiya Janata Party is fighting in 55 segments.
