BJP wants probe into the death

: The BJP on Friday cried foul over the recent death of a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) worker whose body was found trapped in a sewage pipe.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, alleged that the DJB is trying to hide the truth behind the death of Vinay Sirohi who was a pump operator in the Keshopur Sewage Treatment Plant.

“The Board is treating it as an ordinary case. There must be a high-level inquiry into the accident and an FIR must be registered against the contractor,” said Mr Gupta. He also demanded adequate compensation and job to the family.

“The DJB is responsible for gross negligence. Despite getting stuck inside a pipe while working at the STP, the tragedy was not reported in time as there was no one to look after the plant,” he added.

The BJP MLA from Rohini said that the death of Mr Sirohi has “once again exposed the hackneyed system of the DJB”.

“The minister said that the Disaster Management team was put to work immediately after receipt of the information. If that was the case, then why did the family file a missing complaint hours after his disappearance?” he said.

Mr. Gupta said it should also be probed why Mr Sirohi was allowed to go alone into the plant.

“It needs to be looked into why he was not provided a safety helmet, face mask or even gumboots. The work of maintenance of sewers and sewer treatment plants has been given to private operators, who have no infrastructure, know-how or basic equipment. They lack supervision,” he complained.
