A Bhutanese cadet at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla near Pune was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his cabin on Thursday. Yeshi Dorji (18), who was admitted to the institute in June, belonged to the Charlie Squadron.
However, neither the police nor the NDA have confirmed whether it was a case of suicide as no note had been recovered from the spot.
“Around 3.10 pm, Cadet Yeshi Dorji was found hanging with a cord from the ceiling fan in his cabin. He was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital in Khadakwasla, where he was declared brought dead. An investigation has been ordered to establish the cause of death,” said a brief release issued by the NDA.
“Beyond this we do not want to comment on anything until the probe is completed,” said Wing Commander Sandeep Chhetri, public relations officer, NDA.
Besides grooming leaders for the Indian armed forces, the Academy also trains cadets from friendly foreign countries. So far, it has trained more than 700 cadets from 27 nations, including those in central and west Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and the erstwhile USSR.
“Our team is conducting primary investigations at the spot. It will look into the post-mortem report. While it appears to be suicide, we cannot be fully certain as yet,” said a senior police officer, on condition of anonymity.
