August 05, 2013 03:04 am | Updated 03:04 am IST - KOLKATA:

During yet another incident of sexual violence against women in West Bengal, four miscreants shot dead a 22-year-old man at Katwa in Bardhaman district early on Sunday after he resisted their bid to abduct his two sisters after molesting them at their home.

The incident took place at the house of Ganesh Murmu in Dainhat. The brother was shot from close range as he challenged the perpetrators.

The sisters raised an alarm and the miscreants, wearing black masks, fled the spot. No arrests have been made, police said. “The miscreants barged into the house between 3 and 4 a.m. They started molesting me and when my brother protested, they shot him. I could not recognise any of them,” one of the victims said.

In another development an 11-year-old girl who was earlier set on fire by a man who tried to rape her, succumbed to her injuries at a city hospital during the day.

“She was admitted with critical burn injuries and she passed away on Sunday. Her body will be handed over to her family after autopsy,” T.K. Ghosh, superintendent of the State-run SSKM Hospital, said. The girl was set on fire on July 31 at Salkia in Howrah district. She was admitted to the hospital with 70 per cent burn injuries.
