Even as Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal ruled out the possibility of asking Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia to resign, the Congress has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for a proper probe.
Mr Majithia is likely to be summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in the Rs 6,000-crore synthetic drug manufacturing and trafficking case. Mr Badal who interacted briefly with reporters after the Cabinet meeting said there was no substantial evidence against him and there was no need for Mr Majithia to resign. He said a minister could not be sacked just because of newspaper reports.Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to Mr Modi, president of the Punjab unit of the Congress, Partap Singh Bajwa demanded that the Prime Minister live up to his promise and order a CBI probe into all allegations. Reminding that Mr Modi had promised to eradicate drugs trafficking in Punjab, Mr Bajwa said the people now expected the guilty to be brought to book.
