As the upper reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Friday, the Valley braced for the season’s first heavy snowfall in the next 24 hours with the authorities issuing an avalanche warning.
Both the key mountain ranges of Pir Panchal and Shamsbari, which are the main source of water for the entire Kashmir region, received fresh snowfall in the past 24 hours.
Srinagar meteorological department director Sonum Lotus said: “There will be light to heavy snowfall in the next 24 hours in the Valley, including Srinagar.”
Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asghar Samoon, issued an avalanche warning in four districts where “people are advised not to venture out.”
“The warning has been issued for the next 24 hours in Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora and Ladakh districts. The areas include Chokibal-Tangdhar, Keran, Gurez, Nawgam-Kalyan, Machil and Drass sector in Ladakh district,” said an official spokesman. Mr. Samoon, who chaired an emergency meeting of all Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir, assessed arrangements in case of heavy snowfall.
