Assault on EC men: four sent to jail in WB

The four arrested persons including state minister Sabitri Mitra’s son-in-law, accused of beating up Election Commission personnel, were remanded to five days’ jail custody on Saturday.

Acting chief judicial magistrate Sumitra Dev passed the order when the four were produced before the court.

The four were Sabitri Mitra’s son-in-law Samadip Sarkar alias Tinku, Motiur Rehman, Muklesur Rehman and Jamal Khan.

Three other persons who were arrested earlier had been remanded to two days’ police custody on Friday.

A four-member team of EC personnel were videographing a motorcycle rally of Trinamool Congress workers on April 10 in Malda’s Manikchak area when two of them were thrashed by the activists, provoking the >Election Commission to ask the district administration to take stern action.

Motorbike rallies are banned under rules framed by the Election Commission.
