Assam Government has moved the Centre seeking its support for the Multidisciplinary Skill Development Programme of the State Government aimed at imparting advanced skills to over eight lakh youth from the State, who have migrated outside the State and are working in different sectors like hospitality, healthcare, IT, ITES, private security guards, in different cities and towns across India.

Assam government spokesman and the Minister for Power, Industries and Commerce Pradyut Bordoloi told journalists here on Monday that he had written to Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Sports, Youth Affairs and Skill Development Sarbananda Sonowal to support this flagship programme of the Industries and Commerce department. The training centre would be set up in every development block to enhance the employability of rural youth keeping in mind the market-driven demand for skilled manpower. He said that the youth from Assam are preferred by the employers for their natural talent for various professions and advanced skills would increase their employment quotient. Assam has 219 development blocks.

Mr. Bordoloi said a survey conducted by the Industries and Commerce department revealed that inward remittances by these over eight lakh youth, who have migrated to cities and towns outside the state, was to the tune of Rs. 280 crore in 2012-13 financial year. Of them about three lakh are employed as security guards. The State Government has identified 50 vocations for imparting advanced skills to these youth in collaborations with private sector companies. He hoped that Mr. Sonowal being a Union Minister hailing from Assam would give a big push to this flagship programme of the State Government.

The State Government spokesman also urged the Union Minister, who is also the State president of the BJP to ensure that fund for central sector projects were release immediately instead of releasing them at the fag end of a financial year.
