Assam bans smoking in public transport vehicles

On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, the newly elected BJP government in Assam on Monday banned smoking in all public transport vehicles.

An order to this effect was issued by the Commissioner of Transport, which said it would be implemented with immediate effect to ensure clean environment and better air quality for public health.

Necessary penal action under the law would be initiated against the defaulters, a press release issued by the Commissioner of Transport said.

The order also stated that ‘No Smoking’ stickers must be displayed prominently inside all public transport vehicles

The WHO-sponsored World No Tobacco Day is observed every year on May 31 with an aim at reducing tobacco consumption.
