Amit Shah cancels Tripura visit

BJP president Amit Shah has cancelled his visit to Tripura scheduled for January 19. Party sources said the national president is unlikely to come before elections to Delhi assembly.

Mr. Shah was to make maiden visit to Tripura and a few other northeastern states to boost party organization. According to an earlier schedule he was to visit on January 20.

“We have been communicated that our national president is not coming. We are expecting him next month,” state president Sudhindra Dasgupta told The Hindu.

The party had fixed a number of engagements for Amit Shah including one to accommodate disgruntled leaders of Congress and others parties in BJP fold. When asked to name some of leaders who will change sides, Mr Dasgupta named Tripura Pragatishil Gramin Congress president Subal Bhowmik and Congress leader Arun Kanti Bhowmik besides some middle rung leaders.

“Several people are approaching us and everyone is welcome as a member. None should expect any preferential treatment or a rank in BJP,” he stated.

Sudhindra Das Gupta is optimistic that influx into BJP from other parties would gain momentum in months ahead of Tripura’s next assembly elections in 2018. He claimed the party is emerging as a major force to take on ruling CPI(M).

Meanwhile, party sources said BJP national General Secretary (Organisation) Ram Lal Ji would grace Yuva Diwas programme in Agartala on January 12. The programme is to commemorate birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
