An interesting tug of war is going on between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Days after Mr. Modi named Mr. Yadav as one of the key campaigners of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ in Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister has come out with his own “clean and green” drive for the State.

In round one of the drive, Mr. Yadav has named three tourist attractions of the State – Agra, Mathura and Lucknow – to be cleaned and beautified, besides announcing ‘Clean UP, Green UP’ campaign in the State. He has also announced cash rewards for civic bodies performing well in the drive.

The Chief Minister has announced cash prizes up to Rs.50 lakh for cleanliness and greenery drives in government hospitals, besides granting cash incentives up to Rs..50 lakh for best municipal wards. The prize money will be equally distributed among sweepers, gardeners and ward boys in hospitals, and all employees engaged in cleanliness work in municipal wards in cities.
