AISF raids cheating ‘job centres’ in Manipur

The All India Students' Federation (AISF), Manipur branch, has started raiding some "job centres" in and around Imphal which are promising jobs to the educated unemployed youths in the state. Out of 27,21,756 population (2011 census) there are over 7,50,000 educated unemployed youths in the live registers of the employment exchanges in Manipur. These "job centres" have been doing a brisk business by taking most of the youths for a ride.

Rameshor Khundrakpam, state finance secretary of the AISF says that the government should check the functioning of these mushrooming "job centres". Most of the parents had deposited their savings to some of these "job centres" in the hope that their children would get gainful employment. However, most of them are cheated, left in the lurch.

There are irresistible offers and job opening advertisements in newspapers. Many of the unemployed youths are hooked. But the movers and shakers of these "job centres" have been extorting money on various pretexts from the ill informed unemployed youths. The AISF had started checking some "job centres" on the basis of the complaints of the parents and the youths.

The findings were very discouraging. Though false promises had been made for appointment in other states these youths who had to deposit money on several occasions were merely led by their noses. In some cases they had been abandoned in the railway stations. Some of the youths who had been taken out of Manipur are staying in rented rooms in some big cities where they themselves are in search of jobs.

The activists found that some of the books had been cooked. There were unmistakable instances of cheating a number of persons. The AISF has asked some "job centres" to close down till things are ironed out.

In Manipur, every job has a price tag and only those youths whose parents have big money get employment. On the other hand, results of job interviews for appointment of various persons were not declared even after three years. In case of policemen they were not appointed even after one year although they were selected duly.
