The police booked an associate professor of Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) on charges of outraging the modesty of a girl student.
The incident undermined the reputation of the institute which the Tripura government had instituted after the erstwhile state engineering college was elevated to national institute of technology (NIT) a decade ago.
The police registered an FIR against Associate Professor Ashish Saha under sections 509 and 354(D) of the IPC.
The action followed after TIT Welfare Committee presiding officer Jhunu Debbarma lodged a complaint with the police on behalf of the victim.
“The girl now in the fifth semester complained that the accused began harassing her since she joined the institute.
We are investigating the case and action would be taken as per law,” officer in charge of Airport police station Kamalendu Bhowmik told The Hindu on Sunday.
The police recorded her statement under Section 161 of the IPC. Meanwhile, the accused associate professor has written to the TIT welfare committee tendering his apology for his ‘misbehaviour’.
A students’ delegation earlier met with the TIT Principal and sought action against the associate professor.
