PANAJI: An associate professor of the Goa University, Anugraha Mohapatra, has been placed under suspension by authorities following charges of sexual harassment by a student.

In January, a complaint of sexual harassment was filed against Mohapatra, a professor in the Mathematics Department, by one of his student.

Sources in the university said the Vice-Chancellor, Varun Sahni, took a serious view of the complaint and forwarded it to the Internal Complaints Committee.

According to sources, similar allegations were made against Mohapatra by some students around three years ago. He was let off with a warning after an internal inquiry, and after obtaining a bond of good behaviour from him. In 2009, another professor of the university, Aureliano Fernandes was held guilty of sexual harrasment of several female students by the Standing Committee of the university.
