7 people died in an accident in Adani power plant on April 20th

Seven people died in a major accident in Adani group's coal fired power plant in Mundra in Kutch district of Gujarat. The accident occurred on April 20 in one of the units in 4600 MW power plant, after which the unit was shut down.

Hot water had splashed from pipeline due to which 21 workers sustained burn injuries out of which 13 were critical and shifted to a hospital in Ahemdabad. One person died on the way to Ahmedabad while six persons died subsequently during the treatment.

"I visited the accident site on Wednesday and Sub Divisional Magistrate (SMD) Mundra and Police have been asked to submit a report. Other agencies including the industrial health and safety and boiler inspector are also conducting an inquiry on the cause of the accident," Kutch district collector MS Patel told The Hindu.

On the accident day, the company had issued a statement, "During start-up, after two day’s shut down, in one of the nine units of Mundra Power plant, hot water splashed from the vent of a flash tank. During the start up some steam is normally allowed to vent."

The company statement had added that eight workers were provided first-aid and were released while remaining 13, who had sustained various level of injuries had been shifted to Ahmedabad for high quality treatment.

"The company has constituted a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team of experts to investigate the incident and submit report within 10 days," it added.
