At least six persons were reported injured in a stampede during an Army recruitment camp in Gwalior early this morning. According to reports received here, several shops were also damaged and vehicles set on fire as the candidates went on a rampage. The police resorted to lathicharge and burst tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. The trouble arose when nearly 15,000 people gathered from neighbouring areas for the recruitment. This was much more than the anticipated numbers.
The arrangement to control the aspirants broke down after some in the crowd pushed those in front to get ahead.
A melee followed and soon groups of people went on a rampage attacking shops and the railway station. Several vehicles were also reportedly set on fire.
According to PTI, a large number of youths returning to Morena after the recruitment camp, boarded the New Delhi-bound Kerala Express and allegedly pulled the chain to stop the train at Morena station where it was not scheduled to halt.
The train remained stranded at Morena as several youths pelted stones at it, Railway Protection Force (RPF) Assistant Sub-Inspector, Amit Singh, said.
Later, RPF jawans intervened and dispersed the crowd from the spot following which the train resumed its onward journey.
