50 students ill after lunch in Tripura school

At least 50 students fell sick after taking food served under the mid-day meal scheme in South Mirzapur High School in Belonia, headquarters of South Tripura district, on Thursday.

Nineteen of them have been admitted to a local government hospital and the condition of a few is critical.

Medical officer Arpan Bhattacharjee said the students were down with food poisoning.

Students of classes 6 to 8 started vomiting and complained of severe stomach pain soon after the meal.

Headmaster Santosh Paul said egg was served along with the usual rice and dal.

The police said no formal complaint had been received. The State government has ordered an investigation.

“There will a proper inquiry to fix responsibility,” Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty told T he Hindu .
