Four persons were charred to death on Sunday when a car caught fire after colliding with a dumper on the Saharanpur-Muzaffarnagar Highway, police said.

“The incident occurred around 9 a.m. between Sarsina and Khatoli villages.

Locked from inside “Since the car was locked from inside, the passengers could not be rescued,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jagdeesh Sharma said.

Three persons died on the spot and another succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital, he said. The deceased have not been identified yet.

Posted on social media The number of the car could not be ascertained as the plate has been burnt, the SP said. The dumper was engaged in the highway construction work, he said, adding the driver had fled the spot.

Mr. Sharma said details of the incident has been posted on social media to help ascertain the identity of the victims.
