At least 24 people were injured as a Srinagar-bound train met with an accident in South Kashmir on Wednesday. An inquiry has been ordered and a high-level team from Northern Railways is arriving here on Thursday. The injured were admitted to hospital.

Officials said that the train started its journey from last stop in Qazigund in South Kashmir at about 11 a.m. and two coaches suddenly derailed near Sadoora at around 11.15 a.m. “Two coaches derailed as there was a break failure,” said an official. “Most of them received minor injuries.” Panic gripped the passengers of who had witnessed a train accident for the first time.

Train's first

This is for the first time since its operations in 2008, the Qazigund-Baramulla rail has met with an accident.

Senior officials from District Administration and Railways rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. They included Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Syed Kifayat Rizvi and area Manager of Northern Railways Upendar Singh.

Railway authorities have sanctioned Rs. 15000 in favour of the passengers who were seriously injured and Rs. 5000 for those who received minor injuries.
