A 19-year-old girl was shot at and injured after she displayed tremendous courage by raising an alarm when some burglars targeted an electronics showroom in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh in the early hours of Saturday.

The girl was hit in her abdomen and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS trauma centre. Police said her life is out of danger.

The victim has been identified as Neeru who along with her parents runs a Safal vegetable shop in Moti Bagh. The three, along with their pet dog, usually spend the night at the shop so as to be available to receive the early morning supplies.

It was around 2.30 a.m. on Saturday that Neeru’s father Jitender heard some suspicious sounds of heavy objects being dragged outside.

“My dog began barking and that woke me up. Initially I tried to go back to sleep thinking that a shopkeeper may have pulled down his shutters. But the sounds continued because of which I decided to wake up my daughter and wife,” said Jitender.

Accompanied by Neeru and their pet dog, Jitender walked out of their grocery shop.

Right across the street, the father-daughter duo saw around half-a-dozen men hurriedly dumping some electronic goods from a shop into a tempo.

While the dog began barking and sprinted towards the burglars, Neeru raised an alarm. That drew the attention of the burglars, one of who pulled out a pistol and allegedly shot at Neeru.

The girl was hit once in her abdomen and the sound of gunshot woke up the neighbourhood. Finding themselves surrounded, the burglars sped away in their vehicle with whatever they could gather.

While the police are yet to get details of all the goods stolen, it is suspected that their worth might run into several lakhs of rupees.

Neeru, meanwhile, collapsed on the floor because of the gunshot and was rushed to AIIMS trauma centre where a surgery was performed on her.

The police said they have formed teams to crack the case and have detained some suspects for questioning.

However, a breakthrough in the case is yet to be achieved.
