13 of marriage party killed in Manipur road accident

The bride was on her way to her groom's house in Nagaland when the mishap occurred.

At least 13 persons, including six women, of a marriage party were killed on the spot and some others seriously wounded when the bus in which they were travelling plunged into a deep gorge on Friday evening at Jessami in Ukhrul district of Manipur.

The injured were evacuated to the District hospital in Phek town in Nagaland which is nearer than the hospital in Ukhrul district.

Hospital sources said on Saturday that the death toll is likely to  increase as the condition of some the injured is serious.

The groom is from Phek town in Nagaland. The bride, who is from Jessami village in Ukhrul district, was being taken to the groom's house when the accident occurred.

Deputy Speaker of the Manipur Assembly, Presso Shimray, in whose constituency Jessami falls, said that the cause of the accident is being ascertained.
