At least 12 persons, including a woman, were injured in a clash between two groups belonging to a particular community, police said on Thursday.

The members of one group were allied to Fazruddin, the Imam of a mosque at Afzalpur Pavati village, while the other group owed allegiance to former village head Buniyad Ali.

According to police, the former village head had constructed a new mosque in the village and the Imam was unhappy with the donations going to the new mosque.

On Wednesday, when the former village head was returning with his group after offering namaaz at the new mosque, Fazruddin’s group allegedly attacked them, police said.

The groups allegedly indulged in stone pelting and exchange of fire which left 12 people injured, they said, adding that the injured have been admitted to hospital.

Police have registered cases against Fazruddin and 16 of his associates.

However, locals in the area claimed that over two dozen people from both sides were injured in the clashes.
