The district administration on Tuesday handed over cheques of Rs. 25,000 each as compensation to ten pilgrims injured in the recent fire incident at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad. District Magistrate Raj Shekhar handed over the cheques at the Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital.

Nineteen persons sustained burn injuries after a LPG cylinder leakage triggered a fire at Saket Dham in Sector 11 on the banks of the Ganga on Friday. Eight critically injured persons were on Saturday transported to the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi for specialised treatment. Each one of them will be given Rs. 50,000, said an official.

Among those injured, all Kalpwasi pilgrims spending the month of magh living in austere conditions at the Sangam each year, were eight women and three children. One of them is from West Bengal, while the rest are from Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Shankaracharya of Puri, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, marked his entry into the mela on Tuesday.
