Nearly 50 people were killed in a stampede in an ashram in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district on Thursday, police here said.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal said about 48-50 people had been killed in the tragedy in Mangarh area of Kunda town, about 180 km from here.

The incident at the Radha Saomi ashram took place when a free lunch, or a bhandara, hosted by Kripaluji Maharaj was taking place, a government official added.

The official said the stampede broke out when a temporary shed caved in. There were also reports that a gate leading to the ashram collapsed.
