Probe report on Delhi school stampede submitted

The report of the magisterial probe into the recent New Delhi government school stampede conducted by Deputy Commissioner of North-East Delhi T.C. Nakh was submitted today.

Five girls were killed and 34 students were injured in the stampede in the Khajuri Khas school on Thursday while they were trying to make their way up and down a staircase after being asked to shift classrooms during an examination.

“I have submitted my report to the government today,” Deputy Commissioner of North-East Delhi T.C. Nakh, who was asked by Delhi Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna to conduct the magisterial probe said. The official, however, refused to divulge any details of the report.

Nakh said he had recorded statements of about 70 teachers of the school, several officials of DJB and BSES besides residents of the locality.

There were conflicting reports about the events which led to the tragedy, ranging from rumours about electric current passing through accumulated rainwater and boys misbehaving with girls.

The probe was ordered to ascertain the reasons and circumstances of the stampede, besides assessing the role and fixing responsibility on erring officials. Nakh was also asked to suggest preventive and remedial measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
