Mukul Roy to quit Rajya Sabha

Trinamool MP meets Bengal BJP chief Vijaywargiya

Rebel Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy will be meeting Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday to tender his resignation from the Rajya Sabha after he was suspended from the party.

Mr. Roy also met BJP general secretary in charge of West Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya, although both leaders played down the meeting, saying they had met at senior Congress leader Shiv Charan Mathur’s residence. Mr. Mathur is the chairman of the parliamentary House Committee.

Mr. Roy said the Trinamool-led government in West Bengal was obstructing the use of his Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) fund. He did not reveal his political plans, only stating that he would be addressing the press on October 11 on his reasons for leaving the Trinamool.

“I will then go to Kolkata for Diwali and following that reveal my future plans,” he said. He said the possibility of him meeting BJP president Amit Shah could not be ruled out.

“All political leaders who want West Bengal to grow would like to join the BJP and work under Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Mr. Vijayvargiya said in response to queries.
