The BJP on Wednesday set about defending the government’s decision to associate actor Amitabh Bachchan with a television show to be telecast on May 28, marking the second anniversary of the Modi government, despite a probe against him after his name appeared in the Panama Papers.
Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda said the probe against Mr. Bachchan would not be affected by Mr. Bachchan attending the event.
Unseemly: CongressThe Congress has levelled the charge that the actor’s presence at the function alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be “unseemly” considering that a government-ordered probe was being carried out against all Indians mentioned in the Panama Papers.
Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said the megastar was only hosting a programme and he was not yet proven guilty by any court. “You may have questions, but has he been labelled guilty. His name has cropped up. Let the court of law take action. He is hosting a programme for celebrating our two years and he is a respected member of society,” Mr. Sharma said.
Abhishek hits outThe actor’s son, Abhishek Bachchan, hit back, saying his father is only part of a function where he is talking about educating the girl child. “It is not a political event. He is part of a function where he is talking about educating the girl child. That’s not a political event,” Abhishek told PTI.
