Doctors call him lucky and Ravi (name changed) by his own admission says that he has cheated death by surviving an 11,000 volt of current jolt. The incident happened last year in August when Ravi went to his terrace to take a phone call.
“It was dark outside and little did he know that there were high tension wires passing near the roof carrying 11,000 volts of current. Suddenly the magnetic field surrounding the mobile got mixed with electrical field of high tension wires.
In a fraction of a second, 11,000 volts of high voltage current entered Ravi’s body through the mobile into his ears and exited into the earth through the groin area,” said Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery associate consultant Dr. S.S.Gambhir.
Reconstructive surgeryThe patient is currently in the hospital and undergoing extensive reconstructive surgeries. The accident happened in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
“Since the phone blasted near his ear, the patient suffered third degree electrical burns along the right side of the face, the groinand thigh.
He remained unconscious for 45 minutes and after being initially treated at Gwalior was later referred to Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on August 3,’’ said Dr. Gambhir.
The challenge for doctors was to salvage whatever tissues were remaining, prevent infection and reconstruct the damaged parts. This required multiple surgeries.
Now eight months after the accident, Ravi has undergone 10 surgeries. “With these surgeries, we have managed to cover the facial bones and give him near normal skin. His groin, thighs and penile area have also been reconstructed. We are now looking at the reconstruction of eyelid and implant of eye ball,’’ added Dr. Gambhir.
