Reacting to a media report claiming that a judge hearing the case of the alleged fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, died in mysterious circumstances three years ago, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said on Wednesday that the allegation was “very serious, and, even if partially true, very worrisome.”
In response to media queries on whether there should be a probe into the matter, Mr. Singhvi said, “Your question whether there should be a probe is certainly a correct one.”
Underlining that the media report saying so was not a political allegation, Mr. Singhvi said: “I think it is dangerous that there is a claim that a judge was attacked. It is a major blow to our foundations — our democracy and our republic.”
Mr. Singhvi was referring to a report in The Caravan magazine claiming that the family of special CBI judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya, who died late in 2014 of a massive heart attack, told the magazine that there were inconsistencies in the reported account of the death. The judge was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh murder case in which BJP president Amit Shah was accused.
