Tension prevailed in Thodupuzha town on Wednesday afternoon after Youth Congress activists threw stones and rotten eggs at Government Chief Whip and Kerala Congress(M) leader P.C. George when he was coming out of the Urban Bank auditorium after inaugurating the birth anniversary observance of social reformer Ayyankali organised by the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha.
The Youth Congress activists, numbering around 100, showed black flags at him before hurling stones and rotten eggs at him.
The rear windowpanes and lights of his car were damaged.
The police chased the activists away. Two Youth Congress activists were injured in the melee and were admitted to a hospital in the town. The police were deployed in the area apprehending protests by the Youth Congress.
The police had a tough time making room for Mr. George to move out, as the activists were in good strength. Later, Mr. George proceeded to Erattupetta.
The incident comes close on the heels of an attempt to attack him at Mundakkayam in Kottayam district recently.
Mr. George has been drawing the ire of Congress men, especially Youth Congress activists, following his statements on the solar scam.
District Superintendent of Police M. Sheik Anvaruddin Sahib said details of those involved in the attack were being collected.
Mr. George said he would not seek more police protection in the wake of the attack.
