The work on the Kollam and Alappuzha bypasses will be completed in 30 months.
An agreement in this regard was signed with a private company at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the capital on Wednesday.
The meeting was convened at the behest of N.K. Premachandran and K.C. Venugopal, MPs. Mr. Premachandran told The Hindu that the cost of work for the Kollam bypass was Rs.352 crore and the Alappuzha bypass, Rs.364 crore. Both the bypasses were attached to the National Highway 47.
Mega projects
The meeting decided to include these projects in the list of the State government’s mega projects.
This would accord the projects the status enjoyed by the Kochi Metro project, Mr. Premachandran said.
District- and State-level monitoring committee would ensure timely completion of the work, he said.
The length of the Kollam bypass was 13.141 km.
Out of that, a 4.8-km stretch, from Mevaram to Kallumthazham, had been completed.
Bridges
The work on the Kallumthazham-Kavanad stretch remained. Three bridges had to be constructed along this stretch and two of these, one 800 m and the other 575 m, were to be across the Ashtamudi, he said.
The meeting was attended by Public Works Minister Ebrahim Kunju and officers of the National Highways Authority of India and the Public Works Department.
