Veteran CPI(M) leader and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, who has on several occasions used the SNC-Lavalin case as a weapon in his battles within the State CPI(M), has welcomed the CBI special court decision to clear party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan of the charges in the SNC-Lavalin case.

Although he declined to give a detailed reaction to the verdict, Mr. Achuthanandan told reporters here on Tuesday that he welcomed the decision of the court to accept the discharge petitions from Mr. Vijayan and others. With the court handing down its decision, his past positions on the issue had become irrelevant, Mr. Achuthanandan said and refused to be dragged into any further discussion on the subject.

Other Left Democratic Front (LDF) leaders also welcomed the verdict.
