CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat has accused the Oommen Chandy government in Kerala and the Narendra Modi government at the Centre of failing to address burning public issues and claimed that the alternative policies conceived by the Left alone can ensure “realistic and sustainable” development.

He was addressing an election rally at Mulleria, near here, on Thursday to campaign for A.A. Ameen, the LDF-INL candidate from Kasaragod.

The UDF government has failed to generate jobs and act on agrarian crisis triggered by steep fall in the prices of areca, coconut and rubber as the State had witnessed 86 suicide by the cash-trapped farmers during the last five years, Mr. Karat said.

The previous LDF government led by V.S. Achuthanandan was swift in taking steps to set up a debt relief commission to end the farmers’ woes. However, the UDF government that followed froze the commission, aggravating the farmers’ woes, he said.

He said that the 35-point LDF poll manifesto has given topmost preference to revive the agricultural sector besides nurturing the State’s traditional coir, fisheries and handloom sectors and an action plan for employment generation.

Jobs promised

The five-year tenure of Mr. Achuthanandan saw turnaround of the public sector units (PSUs) which, he alleged, were receiving serious setback in the last five years of the UDF rule.

The LDF manifesto has come out with a workable assurance to generate 25 lakh jobs in the State, he said.

Mr. Karat reminded that the Supreme Court had slammed the Union government and the States ruled by the BJP and the Congress for their sheer inefficiency in tackling severe drought conditions.

Arguing that the Centre had failed to come out with a policy to safeguard farmers’ interest, the CPI(M) leader said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to remain silent on the BJP assurance made during the campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha polls that his party was committed to tapping huge job potential in the country.

Accusing the Rashtreeya Swayamsevak Sangh of controlling the BJP government at the Centre, Mr. Karat said the organisation was trying to orchestrate communal polarisation and violence in the guise of cow slaughter and “love jihad”.
